Born in Derbyshire, the countryside has provided me with a rich source of inspiration. The tiny ants carrying their heavy loads, the light shinning off a beautiful blackbird's feathers as it sings its morning melody, or the darting of the squirrel as it gathers its hoard of acorns. These are the images that speak to me and that I aim to capture and portray in both my tin work and paper cuts.
Movement is a very important factor in my work. To me this element is responsible for the creatures' magic, affording and displaying their individual personalities. this is obviously portrayed in my automata, but equally, if more subtly in my two dimensional work also. As sustainability is paramount in today's society I endeavour to re-use and recycle as much as possible. Therefore, my work is made from recycled tins, recycled paper, driftwood and other found items. These are often enhanced using printing and other surface decorating techniques. An important concept behind my work is that it offers the viewer a momentary escape from the stresses of everyday life. |
